LUKE 13 22And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.

The narrow gate

LUKE 13 23Then said one to him, Lord, are there few who are saved? And he said to them, 24Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say to you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.25When once the master of the house is risen up, and has shut the door, and you begin to stand outside, and to knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us; and he shall answer and say to you, I do not know where you are from : 26Then shall you begin to say, We ate and drank in your presence, and you have taught in our streets. 27But he shall say, I tell you, I do not know where you are from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity. 28There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. 29And they shall come from the east, and from the west, and from the north, and from the south, and shall sit down in the kingdom of God.30And, behold, there are last who shall be first, and there are first who shall be last.

THREE DAYS JOURNEY TO JERUSALEM

Herod will kill you.

LUKE 13 31The same day certain of the Pharisees came, saying to him, Get out, and depart from here for Herod will kill you. 32And he said to them, Go and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out demons, and I do cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I shall be perfected. 33But I must walk today, and tomorrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perishes out of Jerusalem.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem !

LUKE 13 34O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to you; how often would I have gathered your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! 35Behold, your house is left to you desolate: and verily I say to you, You shall not see me, until the time comes when you shall say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Dined with a chief Pharisee

LUKE 14 1And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. 2And, behold, there was a certain man before him who had the dropsy. 3And Jesus answering spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? 4And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; 5And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day? 6And they could not answer him again to these things. LUKE 14 7And he put forth a parable to those who were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying to them, 8When you are bidden of any man to a wedding, do not sit down in the highest room; lest a more honorable man than you is bidden by him; 9And he who bade you and him comes and says to you, Give this man place; and you begin with shame to take the lowest room. 10But when you are bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he who bade you comes, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher: then shall you have worship in the presence of those who sit at meat with you. 11For who ever exalts himself shall be abased; and he who humbles himself shall be exalted. 12Then said he also to him who bade him, When you make a dinner or a supper, do not call your friends, nor your brothers, neither your kinsmen, nor your rich neighbors; lest they also bid you again, and a recompense be made to you. 13But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14And you shall be blessed; for they cannot recompense you: for you shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the just. The first said to him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I need to go and see it: I pray you have me excused. 19And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray you have me excused. 20And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. 21So that servant came, and showed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. 22And the servant said, Lord, it is done as you have commanded, and there is still room. 23And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.24For I say to you, That none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.

LUKE 14 25And great multitudes went with him: and he turned, and said to them, 26If any man comes to me, and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. 27And whoever does not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 28For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first, and count the cost, whether he has sufficient to finish it? 29Lest perhaps after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,30Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish. 31Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first, and consult whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends an embassy, and desires conditions of peace. 33So likewise, whoever he is of you who does not forsake all that he has cannot be my disciple. 34Salt is good: but if the salt has lost its savor, how shall it be seasoned? 35It is neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

LUKE 15 1Then all the publicans and sinners drew near to him to hear him. 2And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receives sinners, and eats with them.

The lost sheep

LUKE 15 3And he spoke this parable to them, saying, 4What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he finds it?5And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. 7I say to you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner who repents, more than over ninety nine just persons, who need no repentance.

The lost coin

LUKE 15 8Or what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she loses one piece, does not light a lamp, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she finds it? 9And when she has found it, she calls her friends and her neighbors together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost.10Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

The unforgiving brother [The Prodigal Son]

LUKE 15 11And he said, A certain man had two sons: 12And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me. And he divided to them his living. 13And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living. 14And when he had spent all, a mighty famine arose in that land; and he began to be in want. 15And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16And he longed to fill his belly with the husks that the swine ate: and no man gave to him. 17And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father's have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before you, 19And am not worthy anymore to be called your son: make me as one of your hired servants. 20And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. LUKE 15 The son said to him, "Father, I sinned - against heaven - even in front of you, and I am no longer fit to be called your son" but the father said to his servants, "Get the best robe, and put it on him; and give him a ring for his hand, sandals for his feet - and when you've got the fattened calf, kill it so we can rejoice whilst eating it. Because this boy my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found." So they began to rejoice. LUKE 15 21And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight, and am not worthy to be called your son anymore . 22But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23And bring here the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: 24For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. LUKE 15 25Now his older son was in the field: and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant. 27And he said to him, your brother is come; and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has received him safe and sound. 28And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore his father came out, and entreated him. 29And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years I have served you, neither did I transgress at any time your commandment: and yet you never gave me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30But as soon as this your son has come, who has devoured your living with harlots, you have killed the fatted calf for him. LUKE 15 31And he said to him, Son, you are ever with me, and all that I have is yours. 32It was fitting that we should make merry, and be glad: for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

The corrupt manager

LUKE 16 1And he (the Lord Jesus) also said to his disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and the same was accused to him that he had wasted his goods. 2And he called him, and said to him, How is it that I hear this of you? give an account of your stewardship; for you may no longer be steward. 3Then the steward said within himself, What shall I do? for my lord takes away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig; I am ashamed to beg. 4I am resolved what to do, so that, when I am put out of the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses. 5So he called every one of his lord's debtors to him, and said to the first, How much do you owe to my lord? 6And he said, A hundred baths* of oil. And he said to him, Take your bill, and sit down quickly, and write fifty. 7Then he said to another, And how much do you owe? And he said, A hundred cors* of wheat. And he said to him, Take your bill, and write eighty. [1 .bath = about 40 litres, 1 cor = about 375 litres] LUKE 16 8And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are wiser in their generation than the children of light. 9And I say to you, Make for yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; so that, when you fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. 10He who is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he who is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. 11If therefore you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12And if you have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own? 13No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

Mercenary Pharisees scoff

LUKE 16 14And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. 15And he said to them, You are those who justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God. 16The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presses into it. 17And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

Divorce

LUKE 16 18Whoever puts away his wife, and marries another, he is committing adultery: and who ever marries her who is put away from her husband he is committing adultery.

Mathew 5 [Similar Topic] 31 It has been said, Whoever puts away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32But I say to you, That whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, causes her to be committing adultery: and who ever shall marry her that is divorced, he is committing adultery.

The rich man and Lazarus

LUKE 16 19 There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: 20And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, 21And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: also the dogs came and licked his sores. 22And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 23And in hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeing Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented. 26And beside all this, a great is gulf fixed between us and you: so that those who would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, who would come from there. 27Then he said, I pray you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house: 28For I have five brothers; so that he may testify to them, lest they also come into this place of torment. 29Abraham said to him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. 30And he said, No, father Abraham: but if one went to them from the dead, they will repent. 31And he said to him, If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

Problems will arise. "Increase our faith"

LUKE 17 1Then he said to the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe to him, through whom they come! 2It would be better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. 3Take heed to yourselves: If your brother trespasses against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him.4And if he trespasses against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to you, saying, I repent; you shall forgive him. 5And the apostles said to the Lord, Increase our faith. 6And the Lord said, If you had faith as a grain of mustard seed, you might say to this sycamore tree, Be plucked up by the root, and be planted in the sea; and it would obey you. 7But which of you, having a servant plowing or feeding cattle, will say to him by and by, when he is come from the field, Go and sit down to meat? 8And will not rather say to him, Make ready that I may sup, and gird yourself, and serve me, till I have eaten and drunk; and afterward you shall eat and drink? 9 does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not. 10So likewise you, when you shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

LUKE 17 11And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee.

10 lepers cured.

LUKE 17 12And as he entered into a certain village, ten men who were lepers met him, who stood afar off: 13And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. 14And when he saw them, he said to them, Go show yourselves to the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. 15And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. 17And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18There is not found one who returned to give glory to God, except this stranger. 19And he said to him, Arise, go your way: your faith has made you whole.

WHEN IS THE COMING OF GOD'S KINGDOM ?

LUKE 17 20And when he was demanded by the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God does not come with observation: 21Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is inside you. 22And he said to the disciples, The days will come, when you shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man*, and you shall not see it. 23And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: do not go after them, nor follow them. [* ie. the Messiah's reign.  In years to come many Pharisees yearned for the Messiah to appear and rid Israel of Roman occupation.  (Luke 24:21 Daniel 7:13-14, 9:24-26)]	Then they were to ignore false messiahs and false prophets.

Because when the Messiah does appear it will be sudden, unexpected and universal

LUKE 17 24 For as the lightning, that lights out of the one part under heaven, and shines to the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.

But before anything else the Messiah would be rejected by that Generation

LUKE 17	People of that generation would reject the Lord and experience the devastation of Judaea (circa AD 70).

Also when the Messiah does appear folk will be carrying on life just as usual

At the time of the siege of Jerusalem and the devastation of Judaea by the Roman Armies
To save their lives they were not to hesitate. They were to abandon everything.

LUKE 17 31 In that# day, he who shall be on the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he who is in the field, let him likewise not return back. LUKE 17 32 Remember Lot's wife.
LUKE 17 33 Whoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.	Matthew 16 [Similar Topic] 25For who ever will save his life shall lose it: and who ever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. On the day when the Lord appear as Judge

LUKE 17 34 I tell you, in this$ night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be abandoned.*  35 Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other abandoned.*  36 Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other abandoned* (cp. Matthew 24:40).

$ tauth this.  "this night" verse 30. The day when the Son of man is revealed.   (The world is a sphere suspended in space where at the same time on one side it is night and on the other it is day and folk are working,  vv.34-36.  cp. Isaiah 40:22.  Job 26:7.  The Bible stated these facts many centuries before Galileo.) * afihmi abandoned.  ie. not one of those who will be gathered to be with the Lord. cp. v.31 and ch.25 v.46. This word does not imply that they are left to live on the earth.  It should not be interpreted so as to contradict other scripture.  John 5:28, 29.   2.Timothy 4:1.   1.Peter 4:5.

Where? Wherever the Spiritually dead are

LUKE 17 37 And they answered and said to him, Where, Lord? And he said to them, Wherever the body is, there will the vultures% be gathered together (cp. Matthew 24:28).	Matthew 24 [Similar Topic] 28 For wherever the carcass is, there the vultures% will be gathered together.
% aetoV  eagles.  This cannot refer to the eagle on the Roman military standard because eagles do not usually gather around carrion, this most likely refers to vultures.  It seems to be directed at the spiritually dead, the wicked. No one will escape the day of Judgement.

The Persistent Widow

LUKE 18 1And he spoke a parable to them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;2Saying, There was in a city a judge, who did not fear God, nor regard man: 3And there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, Avenge me of my adversary. 4And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5Yet because this widow troubles me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she wearies me. 6And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge said. 7And shall not God avenge his own elect, who cry day and night to him, though he bears long with them? 8I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man comes, shall he find faith on the earth?

The Pharisee and the Publican [i.e. a tax collector]

LUKE 18 9And he spoke this parable to certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes to heaven, but beat on his chest, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one who exalts himself shall be abased; and he who humbles himself shall be exalted.

Divorce - fornication and adultery
