KEY TO UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE AS A WHOLE AND ISAIAH IN PARTICULAR

The Lord Jesus said to his disciples: "...your eyes are blest, because of what they are seeing and your ears because of what they are hearing, for I tell you emphatically that many prophets and righteous men yearned to see the things you are seeing, but didn't see them; and to hear the things which you are hearing but didn't hear them." ( Matthew 13:16-17 cp.Luke 10:23-24 )

WHAT, ACCORDING TO THE NEW TESTAMENT, SHOULD WE EXPECT TO FIND IN THE OLD ?

The words: "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." ( John.5:39 ) lead us to expect to find the Lord Jesus predicted in the Old Testament. Passages like: "beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself." ( Luke 24:27 ) tell us that Old Testament scriptures abound with information about the Lord Jesus.

The passage: "Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow." (1.Peter.1:10-11), is telling us the Old Testament prophets had the spirit of the Lord Jesus in them, telling them how he was going to suffer and its glorious outcome. That being so, we should expect to find in the Old Testament that the writers were keenly aware that these things were to happen, that it underlay their writings.

If we do not bear in mind, as we read through the Old Testament scriptures, that the prophets expected the Messianic Kingdom to be established at the end of their age, we will fail to understand why they wrote and fail to appreciate that passages from the Old Testament are not taken out of context when quoted in the New but are correctly applied.

  So to understand the book, Isaiah, we need to see its place in world history - from creation to the Lord's final appearing - and to appreciate the underlying theme motivating the prophet. ( See "O.T.TIME CHART")

The following notes are intended to provide a foundation for personal research into Isaiah, pursued with confidence.

And it will happen in the last days [be'acharith hayyamiym, the closing of an era], that the mountain of YHWH's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow into it. And many people shall go and say, Come, let us go up to YHWH's mountain, to the God of Jacob's house; and he will teach us about his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth out of Zion, and YHWH's word from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
