| Question Box Index | DID CONSTANTINE INTRODUCE SUNDAY WORSHIP ? |
QUESTIONWhy do we worship on Sundays? Because many have come with the idea that it was Constantine that pronounced Sunday worship, that Sunday was a day set aside to worship the sun.
ANSWERIt is true that the days of the week were named by the Romans after their gods, Sunday after the sun-god, Monday after the moon-god etc. Obviously the early Christians were not interested in worshipping these gods. "We devote Sunday for rejoicing for a far different reason than sun worship." (Tertullian c. AD 197)
We know, both from the Bible and History that the New-Testament Church met on the "first day of the week" to remember the Lord Jesus Christ in the "breaking of the loaf" (Acts 20:7) it was also the day when they put aside money for church benevolence (1Corinthians 16:2)
In a letter by Pliny, governor of Bithynia, to Emperor Trajan (Epp.10.96) (AD 112) refers to Christians meeting on a fixed day to worship "Christ as a God". This day coincided with Sunday. "on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place ... Sunday is the day in which we all hold our common assembly" (Justin Martyr AD160). Justin Martyr was a Christian. He lived from AD100 to 165 and died as a martyr. This was long before Constantine (AD 274-AD 337)
